Hydrogen Scotland is pleased to announce the appointment of two longstanding board members to new leadership roles: Professor Jon Clipsham as Chair, and David Hogg of Arup as Vice-Chair.
Professor Jon Clipsham – New Chair

Based in Orkney since 2017, Jon has championed hydrogen production from renewables and played a key role in delivering what is recognised as the world’s first industrial-scale prototype hydrogen economy- right on his doorstep.
Jon has been on the board of Hydrogen Scotland since 2018 and currently splits his time between academia, skills, training and industrial advisory due diligence work through his own successful business, Hydrojon Limited, supporting start-ups, project developers, investors, and government agencies internationally.
He has been involved in the preparation and accreditation of Hydrogen courses for industrialists at the Universities of the Highlands & Islands (UHI), the University of Strathclyde and the Renewable Energy Institute, and has also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde, a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a frequent speaker at Hydrogen conferences and events. From 2021 to 2022, he served as an advisor to the Dutch Government on hydrogen policy.
On his appointment, Jon said: ” I am delighted to take on the role of Chair of Hydrogen Scotland and look forward to supporting Nigel and the team drive the association forward. With Energy Security now front and centre across the world, the Hydrogen sector faces changes, which will impact the entire supply chain, from production through to offtake. The need to support our membership through the work of Hydrogen Scotland has never been greater, as we adapt to these changes.”
Jon takes over from Barbara Whiting, who has served as Chair since October 2016. We extend our sincere thanks to Barbara for a decade of leadership.
David Hogg – New Vice-Chair

David Hogg of Arup has been selected as the new Vice-Chair of Hydrogen Scotland, bringing more than a decade of hands-on experience at the forefront of Scotland’s hydrogen sector. David has been actively involved as a Director of Hydrogen Scotland since 2012, initially in his role at the Hydrogen Office in Levenmouth and more recently leading Arup’s team on the Scottish Hydrogen Assessment.
David’s selection as Vice-Chair comes at a pivotal time for Scotland’s growing hydrogen sector and his ongoing involvement will provide experience and continuity to further develop our activities and support Hydrogen Scotland members in this time of change.
David frequently leads on the technical aspects of Arup’s hydrogen projects due to his deep technical understanding of hydrogen and his broader industry expertise, including key projects such as H100 Fife and the Scottish Hydrogen Assessment.
David said: “I am honoured to take on the role of Vice Chair of Hydrogen Scotland. Together with our new Chair, Jon, and the whole team, we will continue to move the association forward, even as we navigate current market challenges. With a renewed emphasis on energy security, hydrogen is key to supporting deployment of renewable electricity across Scotland. Alongside increased electrification, hydrogen will be required for industrial decarbonisation, delivering long-term energy storage, and supporting remote and rural communities. Our members, alongside the Hydrogen Scotland team, are central to seizing these fantastic opportunities. “
