The recent North Sea Future Plan states that, alongside offshore wind and CCUS, hydrogen is one of the three key clean energy sectors on which the North Sea’s energy future will be built. It can support the scale-up of offshore renewables, provide solutions for long-term energy storage and deliver flexible, low-carbon power.
In 2023, the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) took on the role of regulator for offshore hydrogen, becoming the licensing and consenting authority for hydrogen pipelines and storage in the North Sea.
