Hydrogen’s role in a rapidly evolving North Sea Energy Sector

March 2 @ 13:00 14:00

The recent North Sea Future Plan states that, alongside offshore wind and CCUS, hydrogen is one of the three key clean energy sectors on which the North Sea’s energy future will be built. It can support the scale-up of offshore renewables, provide solutions for long-term energy storage and deliver flexible, low-carbon power.

In 2023, the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) took on the role of regulator for offshore hydrogen, becoming the licensing and consenting authority for hydrogen pipelines and storage in the North Sea.

Learn more about the NSTA work with the sector to ensure that hydrogen’s potential for supporting energy security, decarbonisation and North Sea transition is fully realised:

  • The NSTA’s remit and its approach to regulating offshore hydrogen pipelines and storage, balancing energy security, net zero and transition opportunities;
  • The NSTA’s work with offshore regulators, spatial planning organisations and international counterparts to support the deployment of hydrogen and its integration into the wider energy landscape;
  • The NSTA’s research into understanding the feasibility of repurposing offshore gas infrastructure for hydrogen transportation;
  • The NSTA’s study on the geology and engineering of different storage types and the associated transportation, processing and subsurface considerations.
