SUMMARY:Hydrogen's role in a rapidly evolving North Sea Energy Sector
DESCRIPTION:The recent North Sea Future Plan states that\, alongside offshore wind and CCUS\, hydrogen is one of the three key clean energy sectors on which the North Sea’s energy future will be built. It can support the scale-up of offshore renewables\, provide solutions for long-term energy storage and deliver flexible\, low-carbon power. \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) took on the role of regulator for offshore hydrogen\, becoming the licensing and consenting authority for hydrogen pipelines and storage in the North Sea. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the NSTA work with the sector to ensure that hydrogen’s potential for supporting energy security\, decarbonisation and North Sea transition is fully realised: \n\n\n\n\nThe NSTA’s remit and its approach to regulating offshore hydrogen pipelines and storage\, balancing energy security\, net zero and transition opportunities;\n\n\n\nThe NSTA’s work with offshore regulators\, spatial planning organisations and international counterparts to support the deployment of hydrogen and its integration into the wider energy landscape;\n\n\n\nThe NSTA’s research into understanding the feasibility of repurposing offshore gas infrastructure for hydrogen transportation;\n\n\n\nThe NSTA’s study on the geology and engineering of different storage types and the associated transportation\, processing and subsurface considerations.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: March 2nd\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Scottish Hydrogen Innovation: Making Hydrogen Count
DESCRIPTION:A Hydrogen Innovation Programme (HIP) Event.\n\n\n\nMaking Hydrogen Count is a day of interactive discussion and debate designed to tackle the challenge of making hydrogen stack up economically as an investable proposition\, head-on\, and to build consensus on the most viable pathways to implement Scottish ambitions and goals. \n\n\n\nThis event is being delivered under the Scottish Government-funded Hydrogen Innovation Programme by the Energy Technology Partnership (ETP)\, the energy arm of the Scottish Partnership in Energy and Engineering Research and Innovation (SPEERI). \n\n\n\nSPEERI will bring together the key actors in Scotland who are jointly responsible for taking forward the Scottish Hydrogen Action Plan. SUMMARY:Engineering challenges for hydrogen compression in pipelines
DESCRIPTION:As governments and organisations worldwide pursue ambitious climate goals through greenhouse gas emission reductions\, hydrogen projects have proliferated across what is now known as the ‘hydrogen value chain’ (H2VC).\n\n\n\nHowever\, these projects are typically localised initiatives with limited national or international coordination\, resulting in most efforts concentrating on either the production or consumption ends of the value chain. \n\n\n\nWhile many valuable projects exist in both sectors\, surprisingly little attention has been paid to connecting them. The critical link is hydrogen compression systems (essential for all transmission and storage)\, yet this crucial component has received remarkably little focus. \n\n\n\nGas compressors are the primary technology bridging the production and consumption sectors.  \n\n\n\nThe Energy Institute’s recent research report\, ‘Gas Compressors for 100% Hydrogen Duty\,’ examines this technology and identifies six major applications\, from smaller systems to very large flowrate compressors for gas pipelines and geological storage\, where the greatest uncertainties currently exist.  \n\n\n\nThis webinar builds on this report by addressing common misconceptions about hydrogen behaviour and compression\, reviewing currently available compressor types\, identifying the most promising technological developments\, and examining major outstanding challenges. \n\n\n\nDate & Time: Tue\, Oct 7th from 1 to 2 PM \n\n\n\nRegister here:  https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/39a628e4-1888-43f9-995b-efab098c1f95@ac38fa5a-674b-4c32-810a-1aba0bd61a31 \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: \n\n\n\nIan is a rare combination of career businessman\, Chartered Engineer\, Chartered Environmentalist and part-time academic; he addresses the hydrogen economy from very much more than a single vested-interest viewpoint \n\n\n\nHe has spent over 55 years in manufacturing industry\, mostly in the UK but also other countries; starting as an apprentice\, he worked through many roles before moving into senior corporate management\, eventually as MD of both UK major hydrogen compressor manufacturers\, Howden Compressors and Peter Brotherhood. \n\n\n\nFor more than 50 years\, Ian has been involved in supplying gas compression equipment to the energy industry globally\, particularly in hydrogen service and knows the sector very well.Over the past two decades\, Ian has successively been a Visiting Professor in Sustainable Energy at Newcastle\, Glasgow and Strathclyde universities\, teaching hydrogen-related topics in each. \n\n\n\nFor the past 29 years\, in his sustainability consultancy\, Engineered Solutions\, Ian has become heavily involved in sustainable engineered systems\, in particular their impact on global climate and ecosystems. \n\n\n\nIan is currently a member of the Energy Institute’s Hydrogen Committee and also of its Strategy Group which is defining the hydrogen framework towards 2030.

SUMMARY:Future-proofing hydrogen electrolyser projects
DESCRIPTION:As MW-scale hydrogen projects surge across the globe\, two key factors could make or break investment decisions: confidence in electrolyser performance and their durability.\n\n\n\nIn his webinar\, Dr. Tanveer\, together with Amy Perry\, will unveil how TÜV SÜD and ETZ are building the UK’s most advanced third-party test platform in Aberdeen- independently validating efficiency\, durability\, and real-world resilience. \n\n\n\nProject developers and investors aim to ensure their projects are efficient throughout the contracted lifetime of these electrolysers\, thereby achieving a profitable return on their investment. Our carefully designed test protocols ensure that all electrolysers are tested according to real-world scenarios in which they will be operating. The results provide developers and investors with the decision-making tools to gain market access and secure the right hydrogen off-takers throughout the project’s duration. \n\n\n\nRegister here: http://bit.ly/44rEZEP \n\n\n\nAbout our speakers: \n\n\n\nAmy Perry is working to develop the Green Hydrogen Test & Demonstration Facilities within ETZ’s Hydrogen Campus. She was previously part of Aberdeen City Council’s H2 Aberdeen team\, where she was responsible for developing and managing a range of hydrogen projects. \n\n\n\nDr. Waqas has over 14 years of intersectoral experience while working on hydrogen projects for aviation\, ammonia and steel industries in South Korea and UK. Since June 2023\, he has been leading the hydrogen activities at TÜV SÜD where he is currently the Head of Hydrogen Industry Services for the UK & Nordics market.

SUMMARY:Grid-integrated hydrogen production to support offshore
DESCRIPTION:The UK\, particularly Scotland\, is well-positioned to lead in offshore wind energy.\n\n\n\nHowever\, the variability of wind generation often leads to mismatches with onshore energy demand. Grid-integrated hydrogen production\, both onshore and offshore\, using electrolysis offers a scalable\, flexible solution to minimise curtailment and maximise revenue. This approach supports deeper decarbonisation and enhances energy system resilience. \n\n\n\nThis webinar\, led by Jamie Paul\, Hydrogen and LNG Lead and Alicia Bahler\, Process Lead – Hydrogen at Mott MacDonald\, will explore several hydrogen production concepts\, including onshore\, offshore platform-based\, artificial island-based\, and turbine-integrated approaches. Each will be assessed for its relative merits\, with offshore production shown to be complex yet potentially competitive and impactful. \n\n\n\nThe session will also cover the benefits of large-scale hydrogen storage\, such as subsea pipelines\, salt caverns\, and depleted gas reservoirs\, and the importance of integrating energy systems across the North Sea and Europe to better align supply with demand. It will conclude by highlighting the transformative potential of a fully integrated North Sea energy system. \n\n\n\nThis analysis is based on Mott MacDonald‘s work on the North Sea Wind Power Hub (NSWPH) programme\, the HyOne Offshore Hydrogen Compression Studies\, the development of the Demo 1 offshore hydrogen production and compression design\, and their support to the Dutch Government through the Energy Infrastructure Plan North Sea (EIPN). \n\n\n\nDiscussion papers from the NSWPH programme are available online for an insight into their work\, including ‘Offshore Energy Hubs: Blueprints with Offshore Electrolysis’ and the ‘North Sea Wind Power Hub’. \n\n\n\nKey takeaways: \n\n\n\n\nFlexibility in energy storage and transfer is essential\n\n\n\nOffshore hydrogen production can compete with onshore\n\n\n\nThe North Sea holds vast potential for wind and green hydrogen\n\n\n\n\nRegister here: https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/d71fa7b9-ad4a-4610-9ec1-4f1adf0338e3@ac38fa5a-674b-4c32-810a-1aba0bd61a31 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our speakers: \n\n\n\nJamie Paul is Mott MacDonald’s Hydrogen and LNG Lead with 24 years’ experience across oil and gas and hydrogen. Since joining Mott MacDonald he has focussed on delivering hydrogen projects\, specialising in grid integrated onshore and offshore hydrogen production. His work leading the North Sea Wind Power Hub programme and the associated projects focussing on offshore and onshore hydrogen production and compression solutions gives him insight into the relative merits of different hydrogen production solutions and the challenges in integrating them with offshore wind. \n\n\n\nAlicia Bahler is a chartered chemical engineer with over 14 years’ experience in design consulting. She has worked across a range of industries including hydrogen and natural gas\, with the past four years focused on hydrogen integration projects in the North Sea – particularly large-scale green hydrogen systems. Alicia has led the process concept designs for gigawatt-scale hydrogen production facilities and explored a range of hydrogen production methods\, both onshore and offshore. Her work supports the development of flexible\, decarbonised energy systems that can unlock the full potential of offshore wind and accelerate the transition to net zero.

SUMMARY:Monaco Energy Boat Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Two Scottish student teams will feature at this year’s Monaco Energy Boat Challenge in a great showcase of the Scottish hydrogen community’s collaborative spirit. This has been brought together by Forth Ports Limited and HS members\, PlusZero Ltd and Waterwhelm\, along with support from government agencies and universities working together to showcase the best in Scottish hydrogen technology.\n\n\n\nThe Monaco Energy Boat Challenge involves designing and building boats with new technologies\, innovative materials\, and alternative propulsion systems that reduce environmental impact while maintaining nautical performance.  \n\n\n\nTeam 1: Presenting the Vital Spark Hydrogen Hydrofoil is a Scottish team led by PlusZero in collaboration with Forth Ports\, Hydrogen Scotland\, and Waterwhelm\, with additional support from students at the University of Glasgow’s UG Hydrogen Fuel Racing. Green hydrogen being produced at the Port of Leith is being used to fuel a PlusZero Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) battery hybrid generator\, which powers the groundbreaking drivetrain of the Vital Spark Hydrogen Hydrofoil. \n\n\n\nTeam 2: Designed by Paul Sparrow\, the trimaran ‘The Experiment of Leith H2’ involves a student team led by Dominic Chapman\, President of Engineers Without Borders at Heriot-Watt University\, working closely with the iNetZ+ research institute. Central to the project is its use of solid-state hydrogen storage and recharging technology\, developed through Heriot-Watt’s Decarlog project. This advanced system offers higher energy density and safety compared to traditional lithium batteries\, operating at low pressures (less than 1 bar) to minimise fire risks and eliminate energy losses over time. The project aims to demonstrate the practicality of hydride technology while challenging conventional hydrogen solutions\, paving the way for safer\, greener\, and more efficient energy use in transportation. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the teams and their entries here: https://energyboatchallenge.com/challenge/participants/sea-lab-class-participants-2025/
