SUMMARY:Are the UK's gas networks ready for hydrogen?
DESCRIPTION:The hydrogen economy is rapidly transitioning from vision to reality. In the UK\, the first Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1) has awarded contracts to 11 commercial-scale projects\, with HAR2 set to expand capacity further in early 2026. These milestones are accelerating the shift toward hydrogen integration in the national energy system.\n\n\n\nRepurposing existing pipelines at a fraction of the cost of new builds is at the heart of this transition. The UK’s Hydrogen Strategy\, Hydrogen Transport and Storage Networks Pathway\, and the Energy Act 2023 all identify converting parts of the National Transmission System (NTS) and regional pipelines as the primary route to a national “hydrogen backbone.” Project Union\, led by National Gas\, aims to repurpose around 1\,500 miles by 2032. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Nigel Curson\, Executive VP of Technical Excellence at Penspen will share lessons from UK and European projects\, covering practical solutions\, technical standards\, and operational changes needed to make the vision a reality. \n\n\n\nYou’ll learn: \n\n\n\n\nThe impacts of hydrogen integration in the broader energy system\n\n\n\nReal-world application of ASME B31.12 alongside US and European guidance\n\n\n\nHow to assess and manage materials and equipment compatibility and defect tolerance\n\n\n\nPhysical and operational modifications for safe\, reliable hydrogen service\n\n\n\n\nReserve your spot and discover how existing gas networks can help power the hydrogen future. \n\n\n\nDate & Time: Monday\, Sep 15th from 1 to 2 PM \n\n\n\nRegister here: https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/be377519-99ca-40c0-9149-981ce1dfd087@ac38fa5a-674b-4c32-810a-1aba0bd61a31 \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: \n\n\n\nNigel Curson is the Executive Vice President of Technical Excellence at Penspen\, a leading global energy consultancy. Nigel has over 30 years’ experience in the energy industry\, working on a wide variety of worldwide midstream energy infrastructure projects across design\, construction\, operations & management\, and integrity. Prior to joining Penspen in 2000\, Nigel held various roles at Andrew Palmer and Associates\, specialising in North Sea oil and gas developments. \n\n\n\nAt Penspen Nigel leads the Centre of Engineering Excellence\, delivering energy transition consultancy projects including repurposing of pipelines and associated infrastructure for hydrogen and CO2 transportation and network modelling.  Nigel also oversees the company’s digital pipeline integrity management platform\, THEIA. \n\n\n\nShortlisted as for the Best Thought Leadership award at Hydrogen UK’s 2024 awards\, Nigel has authored numerous technical papers and studies. He also leads Penspen’s industry training courses: Repurposing Pipelines for Hydrogen and CO2 Capture and Transmission.
