Overview of Hydrogen Facility Development: Safety and Environment Factsheet

September 21 @ 13:00 14:00

Join our lunchtime webinar on Monday, 21st September at 1 pm, hosted by the team at Cairn Risk, which will introduce a factsheet covering the key considerations for Safety & Environment during the development of a hydrogen facility.

The factsheet provides:

  • A high-level overview of the key activities developers and operators should consider throughout the project lifecycle. It serves as a practical checklist and signposts relevant standards, regulations, and guidance, enabling those involved in developing a hydrogen facility to create a structured roadmap for managing hydrogen safety and environmental considerations from planning through to decommissioning
  • A common baseline of knowledge on the safety and environmental aspects of hydrogen production, storage, transport, and use. Highlighting the principal safety and environmental risks and considerations.

About Jiali Bian:

Jiali joined Cairn Risk after completing her MSc in Process Safety and Loss Prevention at the University of Sheffield. During her studies, she developed a strong interest in hydrogen energy, conducting research into the safety of storage tanks for hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and applying her knowledge of consequence modelling.

She is currently utilising her extensive expertise to contribute to hydrogen safety initiatives in the UK and internationally. Her work includes conducting consequence assessments and coarse risk assessments for hydrogen-ammonia projects, covering areas such as ammonia and hydrogen production, long-distance pipeline transportation, offshore ammonia pipelines, and venting/flaring systems in Africa during the FEED stage. Her research has influenced project location selection and site layout during detailed design.

Additionally, Jiali has conducted Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA), consequence assessments, and Occupied Building Risk Assessments (OBRA), for hydrogen production and refuelling projects. With a keen interest in QRA and consequence modelling, she is experienced in using DNV PHAST and Safeti and is eager to apply her skills to support the advancement of the renewable energy industry.

About Richard Hunter:

Richard is a chartered chemical engineer with over 12 years of experience gained managing, performing and leading a variety of studies and projects as a Risk and Safety Engineer.
He has experience working in safety consultancies and Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) companies in several leading roles to implement and promote inherently safe designs through appropriate use of consequence and probabilistic analysis.

He has worked across all design stages of offshore and onshore projects for high hazard industries, performing a multitude of safety studies to ensure these hazards are understood and reduced to As Low As Reasonably Practicable. This has included Hydrogen and Ammonia facilities, facilitating Hazard Identification workshops as well as performing consequence assessments, MAH risk assessments and the development of Basis of Safety documents.
